A highly specialized forceps designed for the precise, lateral engagement and extraction of root fragments, particularly in the maxillary arch. The American pattern #150, known as the "Cryer" forceps, features a unique pistol-grip handle with a sharply angled, pointed, and elevated beak designed to engage the side of a root tip for levering it out of the socket.
Primary Use: Elevation and removal of fractured root tips (especially mesial or distal roots of molars) by engaging from the side.
Extraction of small, difficult-to-grasp roots in the maxilla, including those from incisors and premolars.
Retrieval of root fragments from empty sockets where direct vertical grip is impossible.
A crucial instrument for retrieving roots that have been displaced into the maxillary sinus (with extreme care).
